Motorcycle Myths and Misconceptions

Just finished reading an interesting article in which I totally agree with the author's point of view (though you may see me as being biased due to the fact that I love my bikes). Still, you cannot deny the fact that many non-bikers and cagers are guilty of concieving wrong impressions against my favorite 2-wheeled mode of transportation.

Be informed on which of the things you know about riding motorcycles are facts, and which are pure fiction.

Read on and be a convert.

Earthquakes!!!

Wow, we had earthquakes for like 2 days in a row now, the with the last one felt very early today, between 3 to 4 am in the morning. I checked the USGS Earthquake hazards program by the US, a website displaying earthquakes around the world (URL was given to me by my friend Steven. Thanks dude!), and found the epicenters of all 5 recorded earthquakes we experienced.

Here's the link to the infos to each of the individual earthquakes we felt:

Magnitude 5.8 - MINDORO, PHILIPPINES
Magnitude 5.7 - MINDORO, PHILIPPINES
Magnitude 5.7 - MINDORO, PHILIPPINES
Magnitude 5.5 - MINDORO, PHILIPPINES
Magnitude 4.5 - LUZON, PHILIPPINES

Hope no dormant volcano is stirring up from its slumber, waiting to unleash its fury once again into this poor city. Guess its my wild imagination that's just stirring up instead. You would feel the same though if you grew up and live in a place surrounded by green mountains that used to be active volcanoes. God Bless America (err, I mean Philippines... hehehe). God bless us Filipinos.

Hurrah for Paypal!

Good news for all Philippine based online citizen. You can now create you account in Paypal using your Philippine address. Although a Philippine-based account is still limited in terms of functionality, it still is a good start. All hard work of those fellow filipinos who strived to make Paypal notice us is now bearing fruit, especially Paypal4PH.com.

Just created my Home-based Paypal account now. Hope we can tie-up our local paypal account with our local bank very soon.

Python and .NET

Python is a dynamic object-oriented programming language which runs on Windows, Linux/Unix, Amiga, Palm OS etc. It is becoming a favorite language by programmers due to it's portability and fast performance. It doesn't matter if your a seasoned programmer, or just started creating your first "Hello World!" program. You can learn the language in just a few days. It's really very easy to install and offers strong support for integration with other languages and tools.

I started dabbling with Python a few years ago, creating quick solutions and a few libraries for my personal software needs. I was then given an opportunity to be a part of a web-based software development using C# and .NET Framework. Although I still tried creating small and quick solutions in Python, the .NET project I am working on prevented me from fully integrating Python into my application. Don't get me wrong, I really love C#. But Python has somehow captured my fancy.

Then came Google. I was amazed to learn that the Python was a major powerhouse behind the company's powerful applications. I was more amazed in learning that Python played an important role in the development of MMORPG's like Eve Online, my favorite Civilization 4, and even Star Wars: Episode II.

Acting on the excitement building up in me, I started looking back again at Python and started researching on ways how I may be able to implement it on the .NET Framework and be able to have it interoperate with my existing C# applications.

My research narrowed down to two solutions, IronPython and Python for .NET. It is really a good thing to know .NET programmers and even Microsoft people are now taking notice of the Python language's capability.

Unlike the Python for .NET package which "does not produce managed code (IL) from Python code", IronPython does enable you to compile your program into bytecode (IL). It makes .NET libraries available to your Python program, and even extend your existing Python applications by importing libraries and assemblies in .NET.

In terms of execution speed, benchmarks conducted on IronPython produced positive results.

The future of running Python on CLR looks promising. Can't wait to try my hands on this new found toy.

Weathering Typhoon "Milenyo"

The Storm Proper

I woke up last Thursday from the sound of the wind banging on my galvanized roof. The storm is really on it's full rage. I was informed last night when I arrived home that we will be experiencing storm signal no. 2, but something feels not right. The winds tells me this is not an ordinary storm.

We stayed inside my house the early part of the day, with me undecided if I should leave for makati or just stay inside home. I can't even open my doors or windows because of the strong winds which I reckoned to be around 100 to 130kph , exactly the same feeling of the wind on my face which I get when I'm travelling on my bike at the same speed. This can't be signal no. 2, so I decided to stay home.

I can't open the tv for the news, I can't listen to any radio station, can't even turn my computer on and go online. We lost power early morning. Another precautionary move from Meralco to prevent any electrical disaster from happening. They usually turn off the electricity when there are heavy rains.

I decided to go out when I learned that 3 of our trees was uprooted, with one of the tree getting entangled in the process with my electrical line, telephone and cable lines, snapping all three (3) of them in the process.

I had to be a electrician, telephone lineman, and a woodcutter all at the same time to clear off this mess, or at least just some of it.

The Aftermath

The strong winds stopped later in the afternoon with my house and my parent's house still standing proud. We are still blessed, a neighbor just a few blocks away from our place lost her entire house when it collapsed. Although it was really a sad sight to see our favorite place for siesta will not be the same again.

I walked around our compound to check the condition around. Galvanized sheets lying around.

Our rambutan and mango trees uprooted and was thrown like 2-3 meters from the place where it was originally rooted. A sad sight, these trees always bears fruits for us for the last 8-10 years

I had the chance to survey the rest of the city later in the afternoon and saw the sad condition the city was in. The city's favorite Mango tree which stands proud in the middle of the city plaza was battered.

A lot of neon signs was either blown, damaged or hanging on the electric post or electic wires.
McDonalds "golden arches" sign on top of a steel post which stands like 20 - 30 feet up high fell down on one of the store below.

Jollibee's sign fell down too, falling down on a car but was held suspended by electical wires, which saved the car and it's passenger from critical damage (the car was moved when I took the picture and can be seen on the leftmost part of the image, with a guy standing in white shirt).

With the current state the city was in and the damaged that the storm made, I assume power won't be back up for another 2 to 3 days. Sigh....

Still, it still feels good to be alive. And just like what Noah saw after the "Great Flood", a rainbow appeared after the storm. A reminder of God's promise to never again destroy the world by flood and to remind us of how powerful God is.

Count all your blessings!
